MET Board Holds the Line on Prepaid Tuition Costs

Despite significant college tuition increases, including some double-digit hikes this fall, the Michigan Education Trust is holding contract costs steady for families that purchase a MET prepaid tuition contract before January 31, 2008. The MET Board has set contract prices, for newborns through ninth graders, which are basically unchanged from the average 2007 price.

"We must continue to do all we can to make higher education as affordable and accessible as possible," said State Treasurer Robert J. Kleine, Chair of the MET Board. "By limiting price increases, the MET board clearly recognizes the importance of a college education to Michigan's children, and to the future economic health of our state."

It may never be more affordable to lock in tomorrow's tuition at today's rate with MET. Tuition can be purchased by semester, up to four years (eight semesters) of education. Easy payment options are available, and the total MET contract price, including enrollment fees, qualifies for a Michigan income tax deduction.

A new 12-month contract enrollment period begins September 1, 2007. Contracts purchased between February 1 and August 31, 2008 will carry slightly higher costs than noted above. Enrollments are accepted online or by mail. Visit www.SETwithMET.com for enrollment information. Applications must be postmarked or completed online by Aug. 31, 2008.

Since its debut in 1988 as the nation's first guaranteed tuition program, MET has sold more than 82,000 contracts with assets of nearly $1 billion. Not only are MET contracts portable to Michigan private and out-of-state colleges and universities, they may be transferred to other eligible family members. Since 1988, well over 90 percent of high school graduates with MET contracts have gone on to attend a college or university.
